Best of 2016

2016 got weird. As we limp towards the end of a particularly fatiguing music, political and work year, there are a few things to celebrate and acknowledge.

We are still very pleased with our 2016 release, Cycle of Liminal Rites, and the reception it has received in the states and abroad. Thanks again to the shops who carried it and the BBC programme Late Junction for featuring Conrad Clipper on two episodes in April. Look for new videos and amazing music from Conrad Clipper soon. We are also priming our next release, Shout Music, which is a compilation we've enjoyed for years and would like to now share with everyone. Special thanks to Kevin Hein for helping with layout and design.

As always, much love to Angel Olsen and the 'Big Babies'... or is it the 'Hard Feelings?' Recording My Woman was an enorrmous pleasure (cheers Michael Harris and Vox) and there are many roads to travel yet on this tour!
I'd like to highlight the book, The Empty Bottle Chicago: 21+ Years Music / Friendly / Dancing published on Curbside Splendor. The Empty Bottle has been a home away from home for many and the location of countless amazing shows. We celebrated with employee of the decade, Bob Johnson, as he left his post as Empty Bottle doorman (and legend) after 13 years. Congratulations to the staff (Hi Gebel & Matt), bands, tamale guys, bartenders, Bite folks, repairers of the photo booth (Hi Dave), occupants of the upstairs apartment, sound engineers, and everyone who keeps the place open by attending live music. To 21 more!

Also, introducing our new category, 'Coffee.' Without it, none of this would be possible.

PS - Thank you Donita Sparks.

Love Lion to Release Gospel Compilation, "Shout Music"

Here's a sneak peek at the next Love Lion release, Shout Music. After costs are covered, proceeds from this release will go to the BLM movement. Stay posted for official release date.

Culled from dusty 45s and LPs while working at Reckless Records in Chicago, this track is from a collection of soulful, gospel music that accompanied an article written by Emily Elhaj in March 2010 entitled "Shout Music"

"Gospel music has left deep impressions in soul, country, funk, blues, and even Rock n Roll. These genres owe thanks to African work songs, spirituals, shout music, and, later, revivalist bands of the Church."

How I Made 'Cycle Of Liminal Rites'

Conrad Clipper has sent a personal account of the process of making our next release. We have the tapes and should be ready to ship in a week or two. Keep you posted!

"How I Made Cycle Of Liminal Rites

I started recording this album three years ago after I heard a late night radio show discussing the poet Rilke and his use of ‘the liminal’. If that sounds a bit fancy, it’s actually quite straightforward: the liminal world is the one that is around us but always unseen. We may find it in the moment of prayer, in an old photograph, in the moment before we go to sleep, in birth, and in death.

I felt like my music has always wanted to try and capture this quality but I didn’t know how to name it. Once I understood that this was what I wanted to achieve, I was able to start making the record. I don’t read or write music so I had to work out a way to score everything. I did this mostly by hand, using midi. I then played the piano back against these midi scores, and I used a number of different pianos in different locations across Berlin. Then I learned how to build software arpeggiators in Max MSP, which you can hear in tracks like Lake Kinesis and Fugue State. It took many, many hours of trial and error to score the rest of the parts for the woodwind, brass and string sections.

I recorded everything onto a cheap tape recorder and into the computer. Then I sent stuff back out onto tape again, to get that saturation you can hear. I also used a lot of field recordings that I made on my phone, from many different locations - car parks and churches in Berlin, airport toilets, on the banks of rivers, in the Welsh mountains. Finally when I was happy with the way it sounded, I took my gear to an abandoned sanitarium in the French Alps and played everything back, and re-recorded the sound of it playing in these dusty, forgotten rooms.

In this way, the record is actually a little like a live performance but no one attended apart from me."
